Bernhard Strigel

Bernhard Strigel

Bernhard Strigel, son of the sculptor Ivo Strigel, was first mentioned in the Memmingen tax book in 1505. He was the first court painter to Emperor Maximilian I, of whom he painted a number of portraits, including the only known one in full coronation regalia. In 1518 Strigel was elected to the Memminger Council as master of the Mercers guild, where he also worked as an envoy in legal matters. One of his main works is the family altarpiece at St. Stephen's in Mindelheim, which was donated in 1505 by the mercenary leader Ulrich Frundsberg and his wife Barbara Rechberg.
