Abel Stimmer
Trained as a painter in 1564 and 1465 either in Constance or in Schaffhausen. He initially worked for the Lords of Fürstenberg. Three of his portraits, painted for the Peyer family in 1566, were destroyed in the 1944 bombardment. 1572-1580 in Freiburg im Breisgau. Served a prison sentence for disagreements with fellow Catholic painters. 1580 citizenship in Strasbourg. From 1584, as court painter to Philip II, Margrave of Baden-Baden, he completed the ancestral gallery begun by his brother Tobias.

Abel Stimmer (1542–after 1606) (?), 1569 Metal, Copper, paintedAbel was one of four brothers of Tobias Stimmer and worked part-time in his workshop. The two painted an audience chamber in the palace of the Margrave of Baden-Baden. The attribution of the miniature was based on stylistic comparisons with a portrait of Elisabeth Peyer in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel.
